While growing up in East Acton I have fond memories of this establishment. Which I was privileged to visit once in a while with my parents. The surroundings were absolutely unique. Nothing I could relate to apart from pie and mash shops . Hope everyone who sampled the delicious delights as I did brings back memories.
Mr k mccluskey Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9110084440464006279.post-76976057847446764392024-02-08T09:23:53.022+00:002024-02-08T09:23:53.022+00:00I’ll check the directories for you. The loss must feel greater for you as I only ever became aware of it by the time it was closed and then, due to finding all those lovely original features, especially the fish tiles on the outside, I often made an effort to check up on the building if I was in the vicinity.
Another fish and chip shop has recently suffered a loss of its tiles. I discovered last year that although the premises is still trading in fish and chips, some lovely colourful Art Nouveau have been obliterated or removed. Sigh. Thank you,...Such a wonderful trip down Memory Lane! Thank you, You highlighted all the streets I hung out on & brought back so many memories. I lived at the lower end of Brentwood Road opposite the Wheatsheaf Pub & sandwiched between the Old Oak Pub on the junction with South Street & the Durham Arms further down our road past George Street and Oreals Sweet shop & the New Lee Ho Fuk Chinese takeaway on Brentwood Rd where the daughter was in our school, Edwin Lambert Primary & Junior School on Park Lane. My friend’s Mum Mrs. Tew worked in Speight’s bakery on the corner with Park Lane for years and gave us a warm buttered roll every morning as we passed by walking to school, it was delicious. Charlie the Butcher was indeed just around the corner & deservedly awarded for his pork sausages. He would take us out in the back where he would give us a lucky rabbit paw wrapped in a tissue to keep (how gruesome were we lol) but we were delighted at the time & would show our friends at school, & everyone wanted one! Miss Hainsby was my first teacher there when I was 5, & Mr. Dennis was my last teacher, aged 11 (1972-1978) Mr. King was our Headmaster & I learnt so much from all of them. I too went on to Marshalls Park (78-83).

I remember Roneo Corner & Paige & Calnan’s both on South Street before the station end, the latter being very close to what seemed like a small stream under a little bridge which is actually the River Rom (or Rum) where Romford gets its name from, and a Wedding Dress shop (Pronuptia maybe?) & a Reiss clothing store further along South Street from MacDonalds on the same side.

I attended dance classes for many years upstairs in the Odeon cinema & my elder sisters dyed their hair in stripey food colour strands to also see the David Bowie concert there almost giving our poor mum a nervous breakdown as they stepped out the house looking like clowns. David Essex performed there too.
I fondly remember Kiddie City Toys 2 shops down from the Wimpy Bar in the last arcade at the top end of the market before you enter the underpass to cross over to Romford Library & North End Road where all the bus stops were and the old friendly tramp hung his ship paintings on the railings for sale.
There was the sizeable fishmongers in the Quadrant Arcade & a jewellery / gold shop opposite in the middle. In the internal bend in the Arcade was an independant clothing shop that was very popular with the girls but I can’t recall the name. I spent half of my life in their changing rooms & who can forget Jane Norman up towards the market on South Street or the black taxi rank on Eastern Ave opposite the Station. I loved the Bitter End Pub I must say with all its OTT dolls, puppets & paraphanelia hanging off the ceiling, it seemed so creatively modern & unique for its time.

There was a row of shops opposite the side facade of Debenhams leading down to the market that were covered with a collinade style roof to protect from the rain & the boxy tiled fountain opposite WH Smiths was a right of passage to fill it up with fairy liquid & food colours and get thrown into it complete with our school uniform shirts covered in friends well wishes handwriting on our last day at school when we were 16! A lot of laughter & shenanigans ensued which other adult passers by seemed to turn a blind eye to understanding it was quite innocent fun & a known tradition!
I got my first purple & yellow Chopper for Xmas one year from Halfords & thought it was the coolest thing ever made 😊

The market was fab on Wed, Fri & Saturdays, you’d have to remember where your favourite pitches were located on each day & watched over by the tall steepled St. Andrew’s Church.

Good memories indeed, big thanks for sharing,
Michelle Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9110084440464006279.post-52032575634461126722023-12-20T14:50:43.593+00:002023-12-20T14:50:43.593+00:00I always thought not so much James Bond as Gerry A...I always thought not so much James Bond as Gerry Anderson, where everything was concrete and Eurostile/Microgramma, prior to being blown to bits.
